- Spring 2008 Award Recipients
In May the FAER Board of Directors approved $1,075,000 in Mentored Research Training Grants to support the research of five promising anesthesiologists. MRTGs provide $75,000 in year one, $100,000 in year two and a mentor stipend of $20,000 per year for a total of $215,000 per grant.
Spring 2008 award recipients are:
Tobias Eckle, MD, PhD, University of Colorado, Denver, CO, “Myocardial Ischemic Preconditioning through Hypoxia Inducible Factor (HIF)-1α.” Mentors: Holger K. Eltzchig, MD, PhD; Sean P. Colgan, PhD.

Renyu Liu, MD, PhD, University of Pennsylvania Medical Center, Philadelphia, PA, “A Structural Approach to the Human µ-receptor.” Mentor: Roderic G. Eckenhoff, MD.

Konrad Meissner, MD, Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis, MO, “Visualizing Cerebral Opioid Transport and P-glycoprotein Function.” Mentor: Evan D. Kharasch, MD, PhD.

Jutta Novalija, MD, PhD, Medical College of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, WI, “Anesthetic Protection of Endothelial Function from Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury in Humans.” Mentor: Thomas J. Ebert, MD, PhD. Dr. Novalija’s grant is co-sponsored by the Association of Midwest Academic Anesthesia Chairs.

Christina M. Spofford, MD, PhD, University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City, IA, “Neurotrophic Factor Expression in Post-Operative Pain.” Mentor: Timothy J. Brennan, MD, PhD. Dr. Spofford's grant is supported by an educational grant from Endo Pharmaceuticals.
Research Fellowship Grant Changes
Beginning with grants submitted for the August 15, 2008, application deadline, FAER will increase support for the Research Fellowship Grant from $50,000 to $75,000. In addition, the time a recipient must spend in research related to a project funded through an RFG will be reduced from 80% to 75%.
